London: An Afghan refugee allegedly stabbed a man to death while trying to end a dispute over an e-scooter, according to evidence presented in a UK court.

On March 12 last year, 21-year-old Thomas Roberts was stabbed twice outside a sandwich shop in the English city of Bournemouth.

An Afghan migrant, 21-year-old Lawangin Abdulrahimzai, who was seen on CCTV fleeing the scene, is currently on trial at Salisbury Crown Court for Roberts' murder.

Prosecutor Nick Laubenberg told the court that the victim had been spending a "very chill" evening with a friend, James Medway, before getting into an argument with Abdulrahimzai over Medway's rented e-scooter.

"There was an altercation with this defendant," Lobenberg said. Thomas Roberts was a peacekeeper who stood between two men and as a result received two stab wounds."

The first knife hit the victim's heart and the second hit his stomach, he said. "James Medway says to Tom, 'We don't need a taxi home, we can run — it's not in use, we can take it,' and he gets on," he explained.

"The defendant immediately confronts him. When Tom intervenes, the defendant gets in Tom's face and becomes very aggressive.

"When the defendant got into Tom's face, he (Tom) slapped him across the face with an open palm, at which point the defendant pulled out a knife and stabbed him twice," he said.

According to the court, Abdulrahimzai did not deny the stabbing with a knife, which he had brought with him from home, and had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter, not murder.

Abdulrahimzai was born in Afghanistan and moved to the United Kingdom in late 2019. He told the arresting officers that he was 16, but the court later determined that he was 21.
