New Delhi: As India gears up for the ICC ODI World Cup final on Sunday, Delhi authorities have declared the day a dry day due to Chhath Puja. Liquor shops in the national capital will remain closed as the city observes the significant festival, offering 'arghya' to the Sun God.
The Excise Commissioner of Delhi holds the authority to declare dry days on religious festivals and significant anniversaries, and excise licensees do not receive compensation for the closure of liquor shops on such days. Earlier this year, approximately 637 liquor shops, run by four government agencies, remained closed on various occasions, including Holi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, and Diwali. The next scheduled dry day after Chhath Puja is Christmas on December 25.
While the closure of liquor shops aligns with Chhath Puja, it coincides with the ICC ODI World Cup final between India and Australia. The match, scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, is set to commence at 2:00 PM IST. Australia aims for its record-extending sixth ICC ODI World Cup title, while India, without an international title since 2013, targets its third ODI World Cup triumph after 1983 and 2011.
