New Delhi: The apex court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on the issue of reservation in the promotion of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in government jobs. Meanwhile, a three-judge bench headed by Justice Nageshwar Rao also heard all sides including Attorney General KK Venugopal, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Balbir Singh and other senior lawyers appearing from various states in the case.
The Centre had on October 6 told the apex court that it was a "fact of life" that even after nearly 75 years, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes could not be brought to the level of qualifications on which there are forward castes. KK Venugopal had told a bench of Justices L Nageshwar Rao, Sanjeev Khanna and BR Gavai that it is "very difficult" for those belonging to SC/ST to secure high positions in Group A category jobs and the time has come when the Supreme Court SC to fill up the vacant posts, ST and other backward classes (OBC) should give some 'solid basis.'
The Supreme Court was hearing arguments on the issue of reservation in the promotion of employees belonging to SC/ST. The court had said that 'We are seeing that the representation in Group A is low. Therefore, instead of improving representation in Group A, you are sure to have adequate representation in Group B and C. It's not fair. That's the government's contention.'
