The next year the World Athletics Championships in Eugenie will now be held from 15 to 24 July 2022 to avoid a clash with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The World Athletics had announced to hold the tournament in 2022 only last month as the Tokyo Olympics will be played in 2021 due to the corona virus epidemic. World Athletics Council said in a statement, 'The World Athletics Council approved the new dates after talks with the concerned parties this week. With these new dates, the World Championship will avoid a clash with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the European Championship in Munich. Previously this champion was to be held from 6 to 15 August 2021.

The Indian coach's disappointing World Athletics decision to suspend the Olympic qualification round by the end of November is a major setback for Indian track and field athletes who were hoping to qualify through domestic competitions to be held later this year. However, these competitions are not yet organized as there is a lockdown across the country due to Covid-19.

The World Athletics suspended the qualification time for the Tokyo Games from 6 April to 30 November 2020 on Tuesday after consulting the Athletes Commission, the heads of continental federations, etc. During this time the results achieved in the competitions will not be considered in terms of Tokyo Games qualification mark or world ranking. India's National Deputy Chief Coach Radhakrishnan Nair said that many Indian athletes will be disappointed by this decision.

Nair told PTI from NIS Patiala, "The verdict of world athletics is a shocking blow for Tejinder Pal Singh Toor (shot throw), Anu Rani (javelin throw), M Srishankar (long jump) and Farrata runner Duti Chand." Star runner Hima Das has also not yet qualified for the Tokyo Games. Olympic medal contenders Neeraj Chopra, his javelin thrower Shivpal Singh, four times 400m mixed relay team, KT Irfan (men's 20km walk), Bhavna Jat (women's 20km walk) and Avinash Sabale (3000m Steeplechase) has already qualified for the Olympics. The World body said that the players who have achieved the Olympic norms after the qualification round starts in 2019, will still be considered as qualified.
