BANGALORE: Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar launched a Brain Health Clinic at Jayanagar Government Hospital on Friday as part of the Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (KaBHI).

KaBHI intends to improve brain health from Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to secondary level district hospitals and, at the tertiary level, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). The KaBHI initiative's major goal is to teach PHC doctors to detect and treat brain and mental health diseases like as stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson's, brain tumours, and dementia.

Furthermore, the effort focuses on educating ASHA workers to screen people for such mental health concerns, which substantially speeds up diagnosis and treatment and may even give a complete cure for some of these conditions.

Minister Sudhakar remarked at the World Brain Day-2022 event held at NIMHANS that mental health care will be provided at the 243 Namma Clinics that will be established in Bangalore.

"Most rural PHC doctors are MBBS doctors who lack the skills and understanding to detect Mental Health concerns. We trained 100 such PHC doctors with the assistance of NIMHANS to make mental health care more accessible at the basic and secondary levels.

Sudhakar also addressed the stigma and taboo around mental health. "Many people hold incorrect beliefs, taboos, and stigmas surrounding mental health.
