New Delhi: Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of a remarkable milestone as he prepares to captain the Indian men's team for the 100th time. The 36-year-old Nagpur-born cricketer is expected to lead the Men in Blue against England in a World Cup 2023 match on Sunday, October 29, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
If he takes the field against England, Rohit will become the seventh Indian captain to reach this milestone. Joining the likes of MS Dhoni (332), Mohammad Azharuddin (221), Virat Kohli (213), Sourav Ganguly (196), Kapil Dev (108), and Rahul Dravid (104).
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy in 2017 and has since led the team in nine Test matches, 39 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 51 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). His consistent leadership and cricketing acumen have contributed to India's successful World Cup 2023 campaign, making them strong contenders for the semifinals.
As of now, India remains unbeaten in all five of their World Cup matches, displaying excellence in all three departments of the game.
In their upcoming clash against England, India will be aiming to continue their dominant form, while England has been struggling. India is also looking to secure a victory against England in a 50-over World Cup match, a feat they haven't achieved since 2003.
The last time India defeated England in a World Cup match was in 2003 at Kingsmead in Durban, a memorable match featuring Ashish Nehra's heroic performance that secured India's victory.
