World Eradication of Poverty Day is observed on October 17 every year. The aim of celebrating the day is to raise awareness about the efforts being made to alleviate poverty around the world. The main objective of World Eradication of Poverty Day is to end poverty in developing countries. This day promotes the attempt to bring people out of poverty through the active participation of people living in poverty. Also, efforts are made to ensure a dignified life for them.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals state that people had to live their life in poverty not because of a particular reason. Only the means of income are not the main cause of poverty, but food, home, land, health play an important role in determining poverty.

Poverty and unemployment in India are mainly due to the growing population, weak agriculture, corruption, conservative thinking, casteism, high-low among the rich, job shortages, illiteracy, disease, etc. India is an agricultural country. A large population of which is dependent on agriculture. Poor agriculture and unemployment cause people to suffer from food shortages. One of the major causes of poverty in India is the growing population.

The United Nations has announced the celebration of The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17 every year on December 22, 1992. Efforts, development and various functions and schemes for poverty alleviation are released by different nations on this day. This day was first celebrated in France in the year 1987. About a million people demonstrated for human rights. The movement was started by Joseph Vrencki, founder of ATD Fourth World.
