Tributes are being shared from around the world following the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died at 92 on Thursday at AIIMS, Delhi, due to complications associated with old age. Known as a towering statesman and architect of India’s economic reforms, Dr. Singh left an indelible mark on India’s history and its global standing. Dr. Singh’s contributions to diplomacy and his ability to foster warm international relations were hallmarks of his leadership. His legacy as a statesman, economist, and architect of modern India has been lauded by world leaders who worked closely with him.

Leaders Mourn a Visionary Leader

French President Emmanuel Macron paid homage to Dr. Singh, calling him a "remarkable individual" and "a genuine friend" of France. Sharing his sentiments on X, Macron remarked, “India has lost a statesman, and France has lost a true ally. He dedicated his entire life to serving his nation. Our condolences go out to his family and the people of India.”

Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel called Dr. Singh a “visionary leader,” expressing deep sympathies to the government and people of India. He was a visionary leader who contributed immensely to India’s progress. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and the nation,” Paudel shared on X.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in fostering the U.S.-India strategic partnership. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged Dr. Singh's pivotal role in strengthening ties between India and the United States, particularly through the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. In a statement, Blinken emphasized, “Dr. Singh’s visionary leadership paved the way for a long-lasting partnership between our two nations.”

Tributes from the United Kingdom

Ms. Lindy Cameron, the British High Commissioner to India, praised Dr.  Manmohan Singh as a "great Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and global statesman" who redefined India’s economic landscape and strengthened ties with the UK. Reflecting on his legacy, Cameron said, “The UK will always cherish his invaluable partnership with our Prime Ministers and his contributions to stabilizing the global economy.”

Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who worked closely with Dr. Singh, described him as a "saintly man" who brought wisdom and resolve to international relations. Manoj Ladwa, founder of the India Global Forum, hailed Dr. Singh’s 1991 economic reforms as transformative, stating, “His visionary policies not only shaped India’s future but also deepened UK-India ties.”

Remembering an Architect of Change

Dr. Singh’s passing has also prompted reflections on his groundbreaking contributions to India’s economic resurgence. Renowned for introducing the 1991 economic liberalization reforms as Finance Minister, he played a pivotal role in steering India toward becoming a global economic powerhouse. His tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 is remembered for initiatives that strengthened India's infrastructure, social policies, and international relations.

Singh, affectionately referred to as India’s “reluctant prime minister” for his reserved demeanor, was an alumnus of both Oxford and Cambridge. His association with these prestigious institutions underscored the enduring academic and cultural ties between India and the UK.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper took to X to share his grief, describing Dr. Singh as a "man of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom." Harper wrote, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of my former colleague, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Laureen and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
The Ex President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed expressed profound sorrow over Dr. Singh's passing, referring to him as a “kind and fatherly figure.” On X, Nasheed shared, “Heartbroken to learn of Manmohan Singh’s passing. He was always a joy to work with and a steadfast friend to the Maldives.”

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai described Dr. Singh as “one of India’s brightest leaders” and a loyal supporter of Afghanistan. In a heartfelt message, Karzai said, “Dr. Singh was a true friend to the Afghan people. His loss deeply saddens me, and I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family, the Indian government, and its citizens. May his soul rest in peace.”
As the tributes pour in, they underscore not only his impact on India but also his ability to create lasting bonds with nations and their leaders. Dr. Singh’s life and work continue to inspire and resonate across the world.

India Govt declared a seven-day state from December 27, 2024, to January 1

In recognition of Dr. Singh's unparalleled contributions to the nation, the Central Government has declared a seven-day state mourning from December 27, 2024, to January 1, 2025. During this solemn period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings and institutions throughout India. This act serves as a poignant symbol of the country's unified grief and profound respect for the former leader, whose visionary leadership and selfless service left an indelible mark on India's history. The mourning period offers an opportunity for citizens to reflect on his achievements and honour the values he championed during his illustrious career.

The Union Government has also extended this tribute beyond India's borders by instructing all Indian Missions and High Commissions worldwide to fly the National Flag at half-mast for the entire mourning period. This global observance underscores the international regard for Dr. Singh's legacy, reflecting his significant contributions to fostering diplomacy and strengthening India's position on the world stage. The gesture highlights the deep respect he garnered across nations and serves as a testament to his enduring impact as a statesman and global leader.

 

Final Farewell

Dr. Singh will be cremated near Rajghat, Delhi, where India honors its leaders. Born on September 26, 1932, his life was a testament to dedication, resilience, and vision. The Guardian, in its obituary, fondly remembered his “trademark sky-blue turban and simple white kurta pyjamas,” symbols of a leader who preferred action over acclaim.  As India and the world mourn the loss of this towering figure, his contributions to governance, diplomacy, and economic reform remain a lasting legacy.
