One of the first birds that the majority of us remember from our early years is the house sparrow. Every year on March 20th, World Sparrow Day is marked in an effort to increase public awareness and protect house sparrows. In 2010, the inaugural World Sparrow Day was held.

Sparrows used to reside in colonies in practically every house in the neighbourhood, as well as public locations like bus stops and railway stations, thriving on food grains and microscopic worms. The house sparrow conjures up many great memories for many of us. Regrettably, the populations of these birds are rapidly dwindling and they are on the verge of going extinct.

Every year on March 20, many nations around the world commemorate World Sparrow Day to raise awareness about how the house sparrow and other similar birds are impacted by expanding urban areas and potential dangers to their population.

World Sparrow Day is an international campaign initiated by Nature Forever Society (NFS) in India to impact awareness about the house sparrow and other such species. For many years, Mohammed Dilawar, an Indian naturalist and the founder of the Nature Forever Association, worked to increase public awareness of the significance of house sparrow conservation.

The goal of World Sparrow Day is to increase knowledge and understanding of the value of protecting and conserving house sparrows and other similar birds. The purpose of the day is to encourage people to value and preserve nature's beauty and biodiversity. The World Sparrow Day celebration serves as a forum for those fighting for the preservation and protection of house sparrows. On this day various kind of events, campaigns and activities are conducted to encourage people to participate in the cause.

More people should become involved in the cause of World Sparrow Day, a very significant campaign to protect and conserve sparrows and other birds. The day is significant for giving those fighting for the protection of sparrows a forum to express their opinions and for bringing together people and organisations from all around the world.

The World Sparrow Day 2023 theme is Not Yet Announced. The World Sparrow Day is inspired by the hope that more people will recognise the importance of the human sparrow interaction. The major goal of World Sparrow Day is to emphasise people’s passion for sparrows and the seemingly tiny things they do make a great difference n the bird’s lives.
