Owing to an injury, a cloud of untimely injuries or various other reasons, several top players are going to miss out on this year’s much awaited ICC Champions Trophy. This has caused a major setback for some big teams, who will contest in the tournament without their strongest playing contingent.

Here is the complete list of key players who will not be seen in action in Champions Trophy and why:

Jasprit Bumrah

The best bowler of International cricket, current ICC Player of the year, Jasprit Bumrah is without any debate, the top high profile player who will not play Champions Trophy this year. Bumrah’s lower back injury which he suffered from during the Border Gavaskar Trophy hasn’t recovered yet. A major setback for Team India, something that they weren’t hoping for as their fast pace bowling star proved to be phenomenal in every format of the game.

Bumrah was missing out in action against England in the T20 and ODI series at home. He was ruled out from the Champions Trophy, as said in the press release by BCCI. This is not a first when Jasprit Bumrah is missing an ICC tournament due to an injury. He has missed the T20 World cup of 2022 before. Bumrah is replaced by Harshit Rana in the squad.

Pat Cummins

Another big name in the fast pace bowling, Pat Cummins won’t be in action. Now the big two missing out, this means Kagiso Rabada of South Africa is the only one who will be the flagbearer among the top pacers. The World Cup winning captain is not playing even in the ongoing Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka. He is on a paternity leave.

But the reason for him missing out an ICC tournament is an injury that he sustained. Australia is going to miss out on his bowling undoubtedly, but also his Captaincy. They are the defending champions of the ODI World Cup, under Cummins’s captaincy.

Mitchell Starc

Cricket Australia has declared that Mitchell Starc will miss out this year’s Champions Trophy. The statement claims that it is due to unspecified personal reasons. This has to be another big shock for Australia as Starc is one of the leading pace bowlers of the world. he has been a match winner for the team under pressure and is crucial at the important stages of the tournament.

Starc missing out is an opportunity for Australia to start playing Spencer Johnson in big league matches and ICC tournaments. Johnson is often referred as Starc’s long-term successor.

Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood is not included in the Australian squad citing injury reasons. This means Australia’s three headed pace dragon of Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood is not in the game this time. The Australian Captain for Champions Trophy, Steve Smith has a tough job right now as he will be leading a pack of inexperienced players in Pakistan.

As we know, Hazlewood has proved to be the most important bowler for Australia, especially during the World Cup in India, during the semi-final and final matches. He dries up runs or ensures falling of wickets from his bowling or from the other end.

Marcus Stoinis

With Marcus Stoinis, Australia is missing out the tournament with five key players who proved to be integral for the team as witnessed in the 2023 World Cup. Stoinis was named in the provisional squad by Cricket Australia, but later he announced his retirement from ODIs on 6th February. As a power packed all-rounder, Stoinis had the added versatility that was always handy for Australia.

It is a teammates drop from the team, that too in quick succession. Mitchell Marsh has also dropped out of the tournament unlikely to play owing to personal reasons and a back injury.

Jacob Bethell

The left handed batter from England was surely having an impressive run with his bat, but unfortunately not in an ICC tournament right now. Jacob Bethell was about to make his debut for England in an ICC tournament, the Champions Trophy 2025 but let’s call it some bad luck right now.

Not only with his bat, Bethell was handy for the team with the ball too. He served as an important asset for England, supporting Adil Rashid with his spin. As of now, his debut has to wait and England will also have to fix with a worthy replacement.

Rachin Ravindra

The Indian origin all-rounder who plays for New Zealand may not be seen in the Champions Trophy. His fitness will be known by Friday or any time soon. Rachin Ravindra was stuck on the forehead when he was fielding against Pakistan on February 8 during the in action tri-series. He didn’t play in the next game on February 10, and might have to wait for the Champions Trophy too.

Lockie Ferguson is also not in the squad sustaining a hamstring injury in the ILT20 league in the beginning of February. Also, fast bowler Ben Sears is now ruled out with a similar suffering in the hamstring.

Gerald Coetzee

South Africa is no far from injuries. The prominent white ball face of the team, Gerald Coetzee is not playing the Champions Trophy. His high effort spells in the ODI World Cup will be missed, and South Africa won’t have an added weapon for attack. Along with him and Anrich Nortje missing out, this means the team will have to rely heavily on Kagiso Rabada for pace bowling attack.

Saim Ayub

The 22-year old batter is considered to be the batter of the future for this year’s hosts Pakistan. Him ruling out of the tournament due to ankle injury is a big blow for Pakistan. Notably, Ayub has scored three centuries in only 9 ODIs that he played so far at an average over 64.

Pakistan is also worried over the fitness of Haris Rauf who has picked up a low grade-side strain in the tri-series against New Zealand. The team is the defending champions of the title, and are hitting the field with the motive of retaining the glory again.

Allah Ghazanfar

This has to be yet another young name who is going to miss out Champions Trophy, Allah Ghazanfar of Afghanistan. He is suffering from a spinal injury that is not recovering any time soon, not for at least four months. A remarkable team that is emerging gradually in cricket world, Afghanistan cannot afford any player injuries especially in a big tournament. They cannot be an upset on the world stage when they fight to leave a mark.

The tall heighted spinner has been a major asset for the team with his spinning web around opposition. Him, along with Rashid Khan is a fatal run for the batters during the middle overs.

Now, it would be interesting to see, how do the teams perform without their top players on field. Especially, Australia that will play without half of its players of World Cup. And India without Jasprit Bumrah, can his replacement be any effective? Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and Mujib Ur Rahman are also not representing their teams in the tournament. There are many questions, the answers to which will be understood only when we tune in to watch the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 beginning from 19th February.
