Marib: According to a government source, the Houthis killed a high-ranking official from Yemen's Ministry of Defense in ongoing skirmishes between the militia and security forces in the country's oil-rich region of Marib. "Nasser al-Thibani, the government's military operations chief, was killed early this morning while battling the Houthi attack aiming at the city of Marib," a source told Xinhua news agency.
During the intense fighting near the Balaq mountain range, south of Marib, the Houthis opened fire and killed al-Thibani and other pro-government soldiers, according to the source. He went on to say that al-Thibani was a high-ranking official in the pro-government Ministry of Defense, which is currently situated in Marib.
According to the source, government forces have retaken control of various areas around Balaq, killing and wounding a large number of Houthi rebel militia members. On Sunday, the Saudi-led coalition carried out 35 aerial strikes near Marib against the Iran-backed Houthis, killing over 200 militia members and destroying 21 vehicles. Hundreds of Houthi militants have been killed or maimed in recent weeks as a result of increased Saudi aircraft shelling aimed at supporting government forces in Marib and elsewhere in Yemen.
