Lucknow: In the first significant move of the Yogi Adityanath second term-government in Uttar Pradesh, the state cabinet decided on Saturday to extend the free ration scheme that was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic for another three months. The programme benefits a total of 15 crore individuals in the state, Adityanath said.

People will continue to receive pulses, salt, sugar, and other foodstuffs, as well as foodgrains, for the next three months under the scheme. The free rationing programme is thought to have played a major role in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) win in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

"The prime minister initiated the Pradhan Mantri Anna Yojana for every citizen during the COVID-19 period, benefiting 80 crore people in the country and 15 crore people in Uttar Pradesh," Adityanath shared details before media after the cabinet meeting.

"From April 2020, the state administration will launch its own scheme for 'antyodaya' beneficiaries and qualified households," he said. The "antyodaya" family received 35 kg of foodgrains, while eligible households received five kilogrammes each unit. The state government had also given each household one kilogramme of pulses, one kilogramme of refined oil, and one kilogramme of iodised salt, the chief misnter said adding  that the "antyodaya" families had also given one kilogramme of sugar.
