Guwahati: A Congress leader in Assam has joined the banned militant organization United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) (ULFA-I). The name of this Congress leader is Janardan Gogoi. Janardan Gogoi himself has given information about joining ULFA-I through a Facebook post. He hails from Sadiya in Tinsukia, Assam and is the Vice President of the District Youth Congress Unit.
According to the information, Gogoi has left his family to join ULFA-I. He has written a letter to his wife on Facebook. In this, the reasons for joining ULFA-I have been told. He has written that, 'Some people are plotting to end the existence of Assamese society. I have realized that some political parties and so called regional organizations are doing business in the name of Assamese society. Today, the Assamese people have become destitute in their homeland. I cannot remain a mere spectator of efforts to eradicate Assamese society. This government has failed to democratically listen to the protests raised by the people. There is no alternative to armed rebellion to protect the interests of Assamese society.
It is worth noting that recently, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had expressed concern over the news of recruitment of new members in ULFA-I. Sarma had said that the government was making serious efforts to find a political solution to all disputes, including those related to the ULFA (I). Earlier, he had said that 47 'boys and girls' have joined ULFA(I), but many seniors have left the organisation. The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is a militant organization based in Assam. Which was founded by Paresh Barua in 1979. It was banned by the Government of India in 1990. Later, differences between the leaders led to the split of ULFA. The command of ULFA(I) is currently in the hands of Abhijit Burman.
