The World and Olympic champion Carolina Marin was reprimanded about her trademark screaming as she thundered into the Hong Kong Open semi-finals on Friday. The courtside umpire reprimanded Marin and cautioned her not to investigate the eyes of her rival, Japan's Akane Yamaguchi while screaming amid her 21-7, 21-18 win.
As indicated by Badminton World Federation rules, players are not permitted to absolute obscenities on the court or direct oral mishandle at adversaries, authorities or fans. A few top ladies' tennis players are known for their on-court screeching, including Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, yet the marvel is uncommon in badminton.
Fans at the Hong Kong Coliseum appeared to be confounded by the display, with many laughing or sneering, and others blaming Marin "I don't care for it. This (screaming) will bother her adversary," said fan Wendy Siu.
Others chalked up Marin's shouts to the soul of rivalry.
"I think it's alright," shrugged Cato Yeung. "Numerous competitors shout."
"This is the manner of which I am. This is my character," the Spaniard told AFP, while Yamaguchi disregarded the conduct as "Carolina's style".
