Post-demonetisation, I-T dept detects Rs 3,651 cr undisclosed income so far

NEW DELHI: The income tax (I-T) department has unearthed income and assets worth Rs 3,651 crore in searches and survey operation conducted across the country post-demonetisation so far.

Department seized new currency notes more than Rs 98 crore, cash and jewellery worth over Rs 522 crore, with cash being Rs 433 crore as part of its country-wide operations against black money hoarders carried out after November 8, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation, invalidating higher currency notes in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

Official sources said so far total of 785 searches, surveys and enquiry operations has been carried out by the taxman under the provisions of the Income Tax Act, across the country. Department has issued 3,647 notices to various entities on charges of tax evasion and hawala-like dealings so far.

The agency has also referred over 230 cases to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and 190 cases to the CBI in order to enable them probe other financial crimes like money laundering, disproportionate assets and corruption as part of their legal mandate.
