Matia Mahal Assembly seat: Shoaib Iqbal joins AAP after leaving Congress, Kejriwal gave ticket

New Delhi: In the Delhi Assembly elections 2020, there can be a contest of a thorn in Matia Mahal Assembly seat once again. Shoaib Iqbal, who was MLA for five consecutive terms from the Matia Mahal Assembly seat, has left the Congress and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This time AAP has made Shoaib Iqbal its candidate from Matia Mahal by cutting the ticket of current MLA Aseem Ahmed Khan.

Shoaib Iqbal contested elections on the Congress ticket last time. At the same time, Congress has fielded Mirza Javed Ali from Matia Mahal seat and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Ravindra Gupta from Matia Mahal. It is noteworthy that in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2015, AAP candidate Aseem Ahmed Khan defeated Congress candidate Shoaib Iqbal by 26,096 votes. Aseem Ahmed Khan got a total of 47,584 votes and Shoaib Iqbal got just 21,488 votes.

Talking about the history of Matia Mahal assembly seat, after Delhi got full assembly status, Shoaib Iqbal has been elected MLA on different party tickets since 1993 for 20 years continuously on Matia Mahal seat.
