New Delhi: The Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday arrested 16 Indian fishermen for alleged violation of its maritime boundary. Giving information in this regard, the officials have said that all the fishermen are residents of Tamil Nadu. Officials of the Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu have informed that these arrests of fishermen have happened in two separate incidents.

Along with this, the Sri Lankan Navy has also seized two mechanized boats of fishermen. Officials said 12 fishermen were arrested while fishing near Katchatheevu, while the rest were arrested from the Gulf of Mannar. Significantly, in February, the Sri Lankan Navy had arrested several fishermen from Tamil Nadu in separate incidents.

Earlier on March 17, the Indian Coast Guard had also arrested six Sri Lankan fishermen and confiscated their boat for fishing in the country's waters. This was the second such incident that happened this month. According to an official release, Sri Lankan fishermen were fishing illegally in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone on March 16 and Coast Guard Ship Vajra hit the sea about 117 nautical miles southeast of Kanyakumari.
