Chennai:  A new twist has come in the case of death of 22 people allegedly due to consumption of spurious liquor in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu. Two days after the incident, on Tuesday (May 16), Tamil Nadu police claimed that 22 people died not because of drinking spurious liquor, but because of methanol consumption.

State DGP Silendra Babu has told that after examining the liquor recovered from the spot, it was found that it was methanol. He said that the seized liquor was sent to the laboratory for testing, where it was found that it was methanol which was stolen from a factory. The government has sent the investigation of the case to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID). The DGP said that this methanol was sold by Amaran from Othiyur. In the arrest and interrogation, it has been informed that he bought it from Muthu, while Muthu bought it from Ezhumalai in Puducherry.

He has said that a person has been arrested in connection with the incident, who has been identified as Amavasai. According to the DGP, in the year 2022, a total of 1,40,649 cases have been registered in relation to spurious liquor. On the basis of which 1,39,697 accused have been arrested so far, while 2,957 vehicles with 37,217 liters of spurious liquor have been seized. Let us tell you that a similar case had also come to the fore in Bihar last month. Where, in Motihari district, more than 20 people lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor.
