Former champion Sofia Kenin won the women's singles second round of the Australian Open tennis tournament with a hard-fought win. US-based 22-year-old Sofia defeated Australian wild card holder Madison Inglis, ranked number 133, 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets at Melbourne Park. Madison is still trying for the first win in tour-level matches. She has lost all 6 of their matches at this stage so far.

After the match, Sofia said, "Of course I am not happy with the way I played, but victory is victory. I was nervous in the first round." 2-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza, who lost against Sofia in the tournament, also managed to enter the second round by defeating Margarita Gasparin of Russia 6-4, 6-0.

Muguruza lost just 11 points in the second set and retained her order for never missing the first round while playing in the Australian Open for the 9th time. Spain's 17-year-old Carlos Alcarez became the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam match after Thanasi Kokkinakis, who won the 2014 Australian Open. When Thanasi won the match, he was one day younger than Alcarez. Alcarez defeated 25-year-old Botique van de Zendchup of the Netherlands 6?1, 6?4, 6?4 in straight sets. America's 20-year-old Aan Li defeated No. 31 Zheng Shuai 6-2, 6-0 in just 47 minutes to register his fifth consecutive win in the season. Lee's world ranking is 69 and she is playing in only her third Grand Slam tournament. Ann Lee has landed in the tournament after a strange feat during a preparation tournament at Melbourne Park last week. Lee shared the Grampians Trophy title with Annette Contawit, as the organizers decided not to hold the final to save players from fatigue just before the Australian Open.
