New Delhi: In the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Kishan Reddy gives information on the arrests made under the Unlawful Activity Prevention Act i.e. UAPA. He told that in 2019, 1948 people were arrested under UAPA. Whereas in the last 4 years (2014-19), around 6000 people have been arrested under this law.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, G. Kishan Reddy informed that according to NCRB data, the total number of people arrested under UAPA in the year 2019 is 1948. He told the House that between 2016 and 2019, the total number of people arrested under UAPA in different parts of the country is 5922, while in this period 132 people were acquitted. On the sedition law and matters, he said that the change in laws is a continuous process.

Sharing the NCRB data, Reddy said that in 2019, 96 cases were filed and only one was punished. While a total of 76 people are chargesheeted and 29 people were acquitted. The main work of UAPA law is to stop terrorist activities. Under this, the investigating agency gets a lot of powers. Its amendment bill was passed in Parliament only in 2019, after which this law got more power. The scope of the provisions of the UAPA Act is quite large.
