Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board chief Iftikhar Ahmed Javed said on Thursday (October 21) that a state-wide survey has said that 7189 are running in the state without recognition. More than 16 lakh students are trained from these madrasas. Javed has also told that about 3,000 teachers and other staff are working in these madrasas. According to the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board, there are about 16,513 recognized madrassas in the state. Of these, 560 are receiving grants from the UP government. More than 20 lakh children are studying in recognized madrassas.

The survey was launched on September 10 to identify unrecognized madrassas in UP and collect details regarding their funding, sources of income, organizations running them and their curriculum. Javed has said that 'The number of unrecognized madrassas is expected to increase, as the information is still coming. The survey is likely to continue in the flood-affected areas of Bahraich and Gonda for the next few days. The employees of those areas have asked for some more time to complete the survey.

The results of the survey will be analyzed by November 15. He has said that 'It will be our endeavour to give recognition to these 7,189 madrassas at the earliest. We want to secure the future of about 16 lakh students. We do not want the children of these madrasas to do petty work. We want to bring students into the mainstream.'
