Lucknow: In a recent turn, the Election Commission has sought a report from Ghaziabad district administration on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “Modiji ki Sena” remark, he made during an election rally on Sunday. Adityanath, who is Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) star campaigner, referred to the Indian Army as “Modiji ki Sena” (Prime Minister Narendra Modi's army) at a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, drawing flak from various quarters.

He had said while campaigning for sitting MP and Union minister VK Singh “Congress ke log aatankwadiyon ko biryani khilate the aur Modi ji ki sena aatankwadiyon ko goli aur gola deti hai. (Congress used to serve biryani to terrorists, while Modi’s army give them bullets). This is the difference,”. According to source report, the poll body has asked the district magistrate of Ghaziabad to furnish a report in this regard and submit it to the office of chief electoral officer of Uttar Pradesh that will examine whether the remark violated the model code of conduct. it said “It is pertinent to mention here that Armed Forces of the nation are the guardian of its frontiers, security and political system. They are apolitical and neutral stakeholders in modern democracy. It is, therefore, necessary that political parties and leaders exercise great caution while making any reference to the Armed Forces in their political campaigns,”.

To be noted  that the remark has also not gone down well with the defence officials who reportedly said that armed forces should not be dragged into politics during election campaigning. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also criticised the statement and said, “such blatant personalisation and usurping of our beloved Indian Army is an insult and a humiliation”. Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi hit out at Adityanath calling his remark "an insult to armed forces". Earlier, the election watchdog had asked political parties to "desist" from indulging in any propaganda involving actions taken by defence forces during their poll campaign.

However, it is to be noted that it had also warned parties and their candidates against using photographs of defence personnel or photographs of functions involving defence personnel in advertisements, or otherwise as part of their election propaganda or campaigning . "...parties/candidates are advised that their campaigners/candidates should desist, as part of their election campaigning, from indulging in any political propaganda involving activities of defence forces," it had said. The EC, in its advisory, also asked the political parties and leaders to exercise great caution while making any reference to the Armed Forces in their political campaigns.
