Meeting between the United States and Pakistan on Islamabad's role in instigating terrorism and instability in Afghanistan and the sub-continent have capitulate little, with principals on both sides troubled by domestic developments.

Entangled in a muddled controversy at home over his purported rift with the US President and whether he called Trump a jerk, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson affianced his Pakistani counterpart Khwaja Asif with little keenness. Pakistan's foreign minister, on his part, brought nothing to the table, at least openly, other than the familiar laundry record of complaints and disclaimers, in spite of several warnings from the Trump administration that it was running out of time before Washington instigating disciplinary action.

Tillerson said - ahead of his discussion with Asif - was not completely satisfying to Pakistan. It revealed the Trump administration's uneasiness over the state of affairs in Pakistan, including its continued rebellious role in the region, its conflicts with India, and reports of a growing gap between the military and the civilian leadership inside the country.

As a result, Tillerson framed US-Pakistan ties in the regional context rather than giving it any mutual lift. Asked if the US has a trustworthy partner in Pakistan now, this was his reply: ''Yes, I believe we do. I think the Pakistan relationship and the US relationship is extremely significant regionally. And as we rolled out the South Asia policy, we spoke about it in a regional context. It is not just about Afghanistan.
