A German mother accused of enslaving a Yazidi woman will stand trial

Berlin: 37-year-old German mother charged with keeping a young Yazidi woman as a slave after travelling to Iraq to join Daesh will go on trial on Wednesday.

Per the German law, the woman, who cannot be identified, was a member of the extremist group for more than four years. She is accused of crimes against humanity as well as abetting and facilitating genocide.

Prosecutors claim she and her husband left Germany in December 2014 and lived in various locations in Syria before relocating to Mosul, Iraq.

Following their arrival in Mosul, the couple allegedly occupied a house whose owners had been driven out by Daesh
In April 2016, the woman's husband allegedly enslaved a 22-year-old Yazidi woman who had previously been captured by extremist fighters during a raid on her home village in 2014.

She was allegedly made available to various fighters for housework and sex. According to the allegations, the husband frequently raped and beat the Yazidi woman with the accused's knowledge.

The accused woman assisted in preventing her slave's escape by taking her black clothing, which she needed to leave the house in Daesh territory.

On March 8, 2019, the couple, their two daughters, and the Yazidi woman were apprehended by Kurdish forces as they fled Syria's final Daesh stronghold of Baghuz.

The accused's husband allegedly told the Yazidi woman that she was now "free" during the escape attempt. On March 31, 2022, the accused was arrested while re-entering Germany and has been held in pre-trial detention since. The trial will likely last several weeks.
