New Delhi: The court on Wednesday (May 17) convicted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi from the Model Town assembly in the country's capital Delhi in a case of assaulting a law student. The court has sentenced the AAP MLA to stand in the courtroom for the whole day. Special Judge Gitanjali Goyal's bench at Rouse Avenue Court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convicted AAP MLA. Out of this amount, Rs 6500 will be deposited in the court as litigation expenses. Instructions have been given to give the remaining Rs 23500 as compensation to the complainant.

The court sentenced the MLA in the year 2020, holding him guilty of assaulting a law student. In this case, in February 2020, a case was registered against MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi on the complaint of a Dalit student. It was alleged by the victim student that he was going home on 7 February 2020. When he reached Jhandewalan Chowk, Lal Bagh, Tripathi beat him up here. The complainant, who hails from a Scheduled Caste (SC), had also alleged that Tripathi had used casteist words against him.
