JALANDHAR: In the Punjab bypoll, AAP's Mohinder Bhagat emerged victorious in the Jalandhar West assembly seat, defeating BJP's Sheetal Angural by over 37,000 votes, officials confirmed. Bhagat secured 55,246 votes compared to Angural's 17,921 votes. Surinder Kaur of the Congress party secured the third position with 16,757 votes.
The bypoll was necessitated by Angural's resignation as the AAP legislator, who subsequently joined the BJP in March. Voting took place peacefully, and the counting of votes commenced promptly at 8 am at the Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women in Chandigarh.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Surjit Kaur secured 1,242 votes, while BSP's Binder Kumar received 734 votes. The victory marks a significant political development in Punjab, reflecting shifting alliances and voter sentiments in the region.
