The United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Day against Nuclear Tests on December 2, 2009. The proposal was accepted by Kazakhstan to mark the 18th anniversary of the conclusion of the USSR-controlled Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan in 1991, after which it began working on it.

The United States also conducted the first nuclear test called Trinity in a desert site in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. The test enabled the US to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. An estimated 2,00,000 people died as a result of this incident while survivors suffered from cancer caused by radiation.

CTBT was established by UNGA in 1996. It was also signed and ratified by 170 countries. 15 countries signed the treaty but ratification has not been made so far. It was not signed by 11 countries.

Significance of the day: The day is highlighting the urgency of any country testing all kinds of nuclear weapons and banning their use. The signatories to the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty have pledged to safeguard peace from the threat of nuclear weapons.
