On June 3rd, 2013, Jiah Khan was discovered dead at her residence. Sooraj was detained by the police on suspicion of aiding suicide after they recovered a letter from her home. Rabia Khan, Jiah's mother, said that Jiah had been "murdered." Later, CBI looked into the case.

Earlier, Sooraj released a formal statement following the announcement of the verdict. After ten years, he claimed to have regained his "dignity and confidence." In a statement, he said, "The Verdict has taken 10 long, painful years and sleepless nights, but today I have not only won this case against me but I have also won my dignity and confidence back. It took a lot of courage to face the world with such heinous allegations, and I hope and pray to God that nobody goes through what I have gone through at such a young age. I don't know who will give me these 10 years of my life back to me, I am glad but specially for my family. There is nothing bigger than peace in this world."

Even his admirers, who helped him through his difficult times, received praise from him. A statement with the words "Thank you to all who have always supported and believed in me, only I know how I have lasted through all these years of suffering and pain" was posted by him on his Instagram story. My only source of strength has been your prayers and duas of unconditional love...Without you, I could not have survived.
