The BJP is losing a lot of senior leaders in Manipur ahead of the Assembly elections. The denial of tickets has enraged strong BJP contenders, with several of them threatening to switch to rival parties as a result. Despite the BJP's best attempts to keep its ticket holders from switching sides, one of its candidates, Lourembam Sanjoy Singh, joined the NPP on Saturday.
Arunkumar Thangjam, a businessman turned politician, resigned from the BJP on Sunday and joined the JD (U).
Thangjam resigned from the Saffron party's primary membership just hours after the BJP revealed its list of candidates for the Assembly elections.
Y Erabot Singh, a sitting BJP MLA who was refused a ticket from the Wangkhei constituency, has also opted to leave the saffron party. On Monday, Erabot Singh is expected to join the National People's Party (NPP). Irate BJP supporters burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday, only hours after the BJP unveiled its list of candidates for the Manipur Assembly election. On February 27 and March 3, Manipur will vote in two phases.
