Air India has announced the much-anticipated opening of bookings for its latest addition, the Airbus A350, a first-of-its-kind aircraft in India. Scheduled to kick off commercial service on January 22, 2024, this introduction marks a significant milestone for the airline.

Initially, the A350 will operate on domestic routes, primarily for crew training and to ensure compliance with regulations. Passengers traveling from Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai will have the opportunity to experience the cutting-edge technology and comfort offered by the Airbus A350, showcasing Air India's distinctive new design. Following this phase, the aircraft will eventually extend its operations to international flights, connecting continents.

The inaugural flight is slated to fly from Bengaluru to Mumbai, signifying the commencement of India's first Airbus A350's commercial service. Air India confirmed, "The A350 aircraft will be later deployed for longer-haul flights to destinations across continents."

Having received India's initial Airbus A350, registered as VT-JRA, on December 23, 2023, under Tata Group's ownership, Air India expressed enthusiasm about this achievement. Campbell Wilson, Air India's Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, described the A350 as more than just a flying machine; it represents the dedication of all Air India employees towards the airline's evolution and marks India's aviation resurgence globally.

The Air India A350-900 features a three-class cabin layout, accommodating a total of 316 seats. This includes 28 Business suites with full-flat beds, 24 Premium Economy seats offering additional legroom and amenities, and 264 spacious Economy seats. All seats are equipped with the latest Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system and HD screens, enhancing the onboard experience with fresh content for passengers.

Air India had previously placed orders for 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with this recent delivery marking the first of the fleet. Five more deliveries are scheduled to arrive by March 2024. As part of the initial phase, Air India plans to induct a total of six A350 planes, making it the first Indian carrier to operate this aircraft model.

Furthermore, among the Airbus orders, Air India has also included 20 A350-1000 in its fleet expansion plans.

Since Tata Group took over Air India from the government, aiming to revamp the airline due to significant financial losses and debt burdens, Air India is now striving for a multi-stage transformation strategy to evolve into a "world-class global airline with an Indian heart."
