New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted citizens on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and Parshuram Jayanti on Tuesday.

"On the occasion of Parshuram Jayanti, I extend my heartfelt greetings to my fellow countrymen. Lord Parashurama is known for his bravery, as well as his mercy and compassion "Today, the Prime Minister tweeted in Hindi.

The Prime Minister remarked in another tweet, "I wish you, everyone, a joyous Akshaya Tritiya. On Akshaya Tritiya, best wishes. I hope that everyone's lives will be blessed on this auspicious day."

Parshuram Jayanti is also known as Akshaya Tritiya, which commemorates Lord Parshuram's birth. Lord Parshuram (literally, Rama with an axe) descended on earth as Lord Vishnu's sixth incarnation to save it from the Kshatriyas' barbarism. In most regions of the country, the day is known as Parshuram Jayanti.

Parashurama Jayanti happens on the tritiya (third day) of 'shukla paksha' in Vaisakh, according to the Hindu calendar. The day falls in April or May according to the Gregorian calendar.
