Ambati Rayudu has been hailed as India's next great batting prospect ever since he began his training at the National Cricket Academy in 2001. He is a middle-order right-handed batter with a focused cricketing style.

Rayudu made his Ranji debut in the 2001/02 season, and the following year, against Andhra Pradesh, he hit a double century and a century. His 177 runs during the Under-19 squad's 2002 tour of England assisted his team in chasing down a sizable total of 305. He then led the Indian U-19 team in the 2004 Cricket World Cup and was a frequent member of the India A squad.

He began his Ranji career with Hyderabad before switching to Baroda, primarily as a result of his disagreements with the administration of the Hyderabad team. Later, in 2007, he took part in the rebel league, which resulted in a BCCI suspension on him. This potential batsman returned to domestic cricket in 2009 after the BCCI gave an amnesty. He participated in the 2010 Indian T20 League season, playing for Mumbai. He did well, receiving accolades from observers.

Later, in 2011, Mumbai hired him once more for the next season. In 2013, Rayudu made his India debut in a series of ODI matches against Zimbabwe. He scored an unbeaten 63 on his ODI debut, making him the third-oldest Indian to do so at the time (27 years, 304 days). He was also one of the five players who the Mumbai franchise retained for the upcoming Indian T20 League season in 2014. The next year, Rayudu scored his first ODI century, making him the fourth-oldest Indian to do so. Rayudu was again included in the Indian World Cup roster for 2015, however, he did not play in any matches.

Rayudu was a middle-order batsman for the Mumbai team in addition to serving as a part-time wicketkeeper. He was essential to Mumbai's three tournament victories. Rayudu was chosen by Chennai in the 2018 Indian T20 League auction after spending ten years with the same team. Rayudu continued to be given opportunities to represent India in national colours when the big boys were rested in addition to participating in the India T20 League, and he consistently seized those opportunities and scored runs for India.

In the 2018 Indian T20 League, Rayudu, a middle-order batsman for Mumbai, was given the opportunity to open for Chennai. He performed brilliantly there, demonstrating his versatility as a player who can adapt to any batting position. He had the fourth-highest season total of runs scored. Rayudu was selected by the national selectors after a successful edition to address India's no. 4 problem, and after receiving several opportunities, he established himself as the ideal candidate for that position.

He missed the bus, though, as Vijay Shankar was chosen over him for the 2019 World Cup roster, prompting Rayudu to sarcastically tweet, "Just ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the world cup." He was nonetheless listed as one of the three backups for the main event.

Several Indian players had injuries during the 2019 World Cup, but Rayudu was passed over in favour of players like Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal. Ambati ended a career blighted by a lack of opportunities by declaring his retirement from all forms of international cricket as a result.
