NEW DELHI: Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, announced on Wednesday the introduction of two bills aimed at addressing the long-standing grievances of individuals in Jammu and Kashmir who have been denied their rights for the past 70 years. These bills are the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2023.

During his address in the Lok Sabha regarding these bills, Shah emphasized that the proposed legislation intends to rectify past injustices, grant rightful privileges, and offer recognition to those who have been marginalized for decades.

"In our society, it is crucial to uplift those who have been disadvantaged," Shah remarked, highlighting the fundamental principles of India's Constitution.

He stressed the significance of providing rights while preserving the dignity of individuals, stating, "It's not just about granting rights but doing so with respect. Therefore, it's important to shift from labeling individuals as weak and disadvantaged to recognizing them under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category."

Shah presented the bills in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards addressing historical grievances in the region.
