New Delhi: The country's famous industrialist Jamshedji Nasarwanji Tata was born on 03 March 1839 in Navsari, a small town in South Gujarat, to Nasarwanji Tata and Jeevan Bai. The city was then a part of the princely state of Baroda. Jamshedji Tata's father, Nasarwanji Tata, belonged to a family of Parsi priests. The family had been working as priests for 25 generations but decided to do business and moved to Bombay. 

It is said that he started work as a small businessman and became successful. In the year 1852, when Jamshedji was only 13 years old, his father called him to Bombay and enrolled him in a local school. Jamshedji Tata worked in his father's business till the age of 29 and then established a trading company in the year 1868 with a capital of Rs 21,000. According to information, Tata was a very simple person despite being very rich. His home, Esplanade House in Mumbai, was always open to all family members, including his distant relatives.

He used to treat children softly but he never allowed children to waste time or money. He believed in the Zoroastrian principles of Humata meaning good thoughts, Hukhta meaning good words and Huvarshata meaning good deeds. Despite his wealth and association with high society, he never consumed wine or other alcoholic beverages.
