AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of a theft at a court in Nellore, where documents relevant to a case involving a state minister were stolen.

The government has no objections to the matter being turned over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, according to the Advocate General (CBI). The CBI director, the Director-General of Police, and Agriculture Minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy have all been served with notices by the High Court.  The court ordered the DGP to produce a report on the investigation's progress and postponed the hearing until May 6.

On April 14, documents and items related to a forgery and defamation lawsuit against the Agriculture Minister were stolen from the Nellore Fourth Additional Civil Judge court.

The event sparked suspicion because it occurred just days after Govardhan Reddy was appointed to the state government.

A laptop, iPad, three phones, and documents were among the items taken. They were all accused of being involved in a forgery and defamation case brought against Govardhan Reddy by prominent opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy.

Former minister Somireddy allegedly held properties worth thousands of crores of rupees in foreign nations, according to Sarvepally MLA Kakani Goverdhan Reddy. He gave the media a few documents that he said were property documents. Somireddy then filed a complaint with the Nellore rural police station alleging that Govardhan Reddy had fabricated documents and requested that he be prosecuted.  He even went to court to sue Goverdhan for defamation.

Later, it was discovered that the documents submitted by Goverdhan Reddy were falsified, and he was charged.
