Punjab: Investigation intensified in seed scam, one more person arrested

Taking action on illegal and unauthorized sale of seeds, the Ludhiana district administration along with police and agriculture department officials raided a total of 1900 locations of seed dealers. During this time 12 dealers were found selling unauthorized seeds. The stores were sealed after their licenses were cancelled. A case will be registered against all these dealers. Meanwhile, another person has been arrested in the seed scam on Tuesday.

Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta has formed a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to get to the bottom of the case of selling fake seeds to farmers. He said that this new SIT led by ADGP Punjab Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) Naresh Arora will take up the investigation conducted by Ludhiana's SIT till date.

Other members of the SIT include IGP (Crime) Nageswara Rao, Police Commissioner (Ludhiana) Rakesh Aggarwal, Joint Director (Agriculture) Sukhdev Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ludhiana Ashwani Kapoor. The SIT will work under the supervision of ADGP-cum-Director Bureau of Investigation Punjab. DGP said that the 3, 8, 9, essential commodities of the Seed Control Order Act are the main sections under sections 2, 3, 7 and 420 of the IPC.

A case has been registered on the complaint of the agricultural officer. The arrested person has been identified as Baljinder Singh alias Baliyan resident of Bhundari district Ludhiana. This is the second arrest in the seed scam. Earlier, Harvinder Singh alias Kaka Brar was arrested. Baljinder Singh owns 34 acres of land in Jagraon and is a member of the Farmers Association formed by PAU (Punjab Agricultural University). This association gives information about new seeds and techniques to farmers.
