JAMMU: On the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, security has been heightened across Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have been instructed to avoid any convoy movements, including those related to the Amarnath Yatra, on August 5. The central government revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, splitting Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.

While the BJP plans to commemorate the day with various events, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have condemned the abrogation. The advisory issued highlights concerns about potential terror attacks on this significant day.

Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have been put on high alert. They have been advised to observe a "dry day," avoiding any movement of security convoys on August 5. This includes convoys of Amarnath pilgrims traveling between base camps. However, road opening duties for the Amarnath Yatra routes and national highways will maintain active deployments.

The revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir within India, was followed by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act. This act divided the former state into the union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite widespread political opposition in the region, the BJP will hold events to mark this anniversary, as the abrogation was a key part of their election manifesto. The advisory has been issued due to fears of possible terror attacks on this significant day.
