Guwahati : Addressing a press briefing on the eve of 100 days of the BJP-led Assam government, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that under the new education policy, the state government has made both the subjects available to all students in the state. It has been decided to make the study of History and Geography compulsory. The Chief Minister said, "Both the subjects will be added as compulsory subjects for all the students through all mediums. They will learn Geography along with Assam and Indian History till class X." The Assam government has also decided to withdraw its earlier decision to reserve 75 per cent seats in undergraduate courses for state board pass-outs in all government colleges.

Earlier, state education minister Ranoj Pegu said that board-based reservation would exist in colleges in rural areas, while seats in urban areas would be open to students from all boards. “The reservation of 75% seats for Assam Board students will not be applicable in urban areas. In urban areas, students from all boards will have to compete for a seat in degree courses. This will be purely on the basis of their merit, " He said.

On the other hand, the Department of Secondary Education has decided to continue ALTE as a part of core subject 'in lieu of MIL' as before. Meanwhile, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has released a notification in this regard. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu wrote, "The subject 'Alternative English (ALTE)' will be continued as part of the main subject 'in lieu of MIL' as before. AHSEC has issued a notification in this regard."
