Just 21-year-old Sofia Kenin defeated two-time Grand Slam champion Spain's Garbine Muguruza to win her first Grand Slam Australia Open title of the year. Born in Moscow, Russia, this American player won the final match lasting 2 hours 2 minutes 4-6 6-2 6-2. This is also the first grand slam of Sophia's career. Both players reached the final of the Australia Open for the first time. After losing the first set to the 26-year-old Muguruza, Sophia returned to a domineering manner, everyone became crazy.

After this victory, Sophia not only got 28 lakh US Dollars (20 crores rupees) but her ranking also increased from 14th to seventh. Sophia Kenin, who reached the finals after defeating world number one Ashley Barty, saw her dream of winning the Grand Slam at the age of five. This was the second match between Sofia Canin and Garbine Muguruza and both times the American player won. The previous match was won by Kenin at the China Open. Sophia won her first WTA title in Hobart a year earlier and won two more titles during the season.

Before the tournament, the tennis lovers, who considered Serena Williams as a strong contender, did not even imagine this final. The 21-year-old Kenin proved to be the 'giant killer' in a tournament full of upsets as she now surpassed Serena and also became America's number one player.
