Canberra: According to the poll release, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has lost ground as the country's favourite leader. As per news reports, the latest Newspoll, which was released on Sunday night, suggested that Anthony Albanese, the leader of the opposition Labor Party, has closed the gap on Morrison.
According to the poll, 46 percent of respondents chose Morrison as their preferred Prime Minister, compared to 38 percent who chose Albanese. It's the closest margin between them since March 2020, and it's a significant change from February, when Morrison led 61-26.
Morrison's attendance at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, when he committed to a 2050 net zero emissions objective, sparked the poll of 1,524 voters.
Albanese has been a vocal opponent of Morrison's signature climate programme, calling it a "scam" with little specificity. Before the end of 2021, the Labor leader committed to produce his own climate programme. On a two-party preferred basis, Labor leads Morrison's coalition 53-47, according to Newspoll, a tiny shift in the government's favour from 54-46 at the start of October. In the next general election, which is set to take place in May 2022, 38 percent of respondents stated they expect to vote Labor as their first choice, compared to 37 percent for the coalition.
