Backpacker Scores $1 Airbnb in Bangkok: Inside the Ultra-Cheap Stay

An American backpacker has managed to secure an Airbnb in Bangkok for just one dollar (Rs 84) per night, despite the soaring costs of accommodation in popular tourist spots. Known online as Mike Rari, this budget traveler shared his experience in a viral video, giving a rare glimpse into what ultra-cheap lodging in the Thai capital looks like.

In his video, Rari, a content creator and prankster, excitedly revealed, "I got this place for only one dollar a night, and I'm going to show you what it's like." The footage, which quickly gained popularity online, offers an honest view of the conditions that come with such a minimal price.

The exact location of this Airbnb remains unclear, but it is reportedly around 10 minutes from Bangkok’s vibrant Chinatown. To reach his temporary lodging, Rari had to climb a shaky ladder leading up to a rickety, elevated structure.

Inside, the room was starkly simple, featuring just a basic floor cot with mosquito netting, a fan, a trash can, and a small drawer. A US flag on the wall was a small touch of home for Rari.

The shared outdoor area offered only the basics: a small workout setup, a basic laundry station, and a simple kitchen with a table, rice cooker, boiler, and fridge.

The shared bathroom was perhaps the most unconventional feature, where guests had to use a bucket to pour water over themselves instead of a standard shower. There was also a locked cabinet available for rent at just 3 cents, providing a bit of added security.

Despite the rundown condition of the property, Rari found the experience enjoyable, noting it was “a lot of Bangkok for your buck.” His positive attitude highlights a common issue in budget accommodations: travelers often encounter misleading ads, such as a “seaside view” that is merely a wall poster or a bathroom featuring a bed.
