Bhima-Koregaon Verdict: SC extended house arrest of 5 activists till Sept 12

New Delhi: Continuing hearing the petition against the arrest of five activists in connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence, a Supreme Court bench on Thursday said that the house arrest of the activists would continue for another week. The hearing has been adjourned by Apex court till Wednesday, September 12. Reports stated the court has banned the police from making statements to media, adding that “incautious statements affect people’s reputation”. The court also took on Maharashtra Additional Director-General of Police Parambir Singh for going in public and holding the press meet. Maharashtra DGP with its findings came in front of the cameras and shared it with media.

On August 28, Police raided at the residences of five activists. After that, they were arrested. These 5 activists are -

Prominent Telugu poet Varavara Rao was arrested from Hyderabad,

Activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Farreira were held from Mumbai,

 Trade union activist Sudha Bhardwaj from Faridabad in Haryana

Civil liberties activist Gautam Navalakha was arrested from New Delhi.

Maharashtra’s Additional Director-General of Police Parambir Singh had claimed that the Pune police had concrete evidence to prove the arrested activists were planning to bring down the Narendra Modi government. The police have reportedly sized letters, emails that establish their links with the Maoists who was going to plan a “Rajiv Gandhi-type incident” to end the Modi Raj.
