Bangladesh bowling coach Autis Gibson advised the team's top bowler and former captain Mashrafe Mortaza to retire from international cricket, saying he may not fit into head coach Russell Domingo's 2023 World Cup plan. Murtaza resigned as captain after the last home series against Zimbabwe. He, however, did not reveal anything about his retirement plans.

Gibson told a Bangladesh newspaper, 'I think Murtaza's international career has been fantastic. The country is proud of his performance.' He further said, 'The next World Cup is in 2023 and any international coach will start making the team from now on. He would like to test young players.' He said, 'Bangladesh has great young talent like Hassan Mahmood, Mohammad Saifuddin, Shafiul Islam and Ibadat Hussain, besides Taskin Ahmed and Khalid Hasan.

Murtaza, who has taken the most wickets for Bangladesh in ODIs, can play a guide for young bowlers. Gibson was appointed Bangladesh's bowling coach in January. This is the first time that a coaching member of the team is openly advising Murtaza to retire. He said that Domingo would have to see many young bowlers in the next three years, which meant that he would have to test other bowlers beyond Murtaza.
