Patna: Muslims in Muzaffarnagar district of Bihar has been maintaining a temple for 26 years. About a km ahead of the road leading to Laddewala in the city lies a temple between two buildings, which the Hindu families living here left after the Babri Masjid was demolished in Ayodhya. The local Muslims clean the temple every day. The temple is painted every year on Diwali. Along with this, it has also been protected from stray animals and illegal occupants.

Mehraban Ali, 60, a resident of the Muslim-dominated Laddevala, still remembers the days when Hindu families living here left the village after communal conflict. Meherban says, 'Jitendra Kumar was one of my closest friends who left this village. Despite the stress, I tried hard to stop him but still left with the promise of coming back a few days later with other families. Since then only the residents of this place are taking care of this temple.

There are about 35 Muslim families living in the area, many of whom, like Ali, still hope that their Hindu neighbours will return. According to locals, around 20 Hindu families lived in the place in the 1990s and the temple was built around 1970.
