A bill looking to give more autonomy self-rule in basic leadership to 12 noteworthy ports in the nation and professionalise their administration by setting up a Board for every one of them, was presented in the Lok Sabha today. The Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016, which looks to revoke the Major Port Trusts Act of 1963, was presented by Minister of State for Road Transport and Shipping P Radhakrishnan.

The new enactment, which would supplant the Act, plans to give more prominent self-rule and adaptability to the real ports and professionalise their governance.

It proposes to set up Board of Port Authority for every significant port, set up of the Board of Trustees. "This will enable the real ports to perform with more noteworthy effectiveness because of full self-sufficiency in basic leadership and by modernising the institutional structure of significant ports," the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the bill said.
