New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy shared a piece of old news on social media and questioned how Narendra Modi is anti-Muslim when Muslim children got more scholarships in the NDA government than in UPA-2. This was mentioned in a report on The Print website in 2019.

According to the report, education scholarships were given to more minority students in the first term of the Modi government as compared to the second term of the Congress-led UPA government. The print report said that more than 20 lakh minority students had received scholarships in the first term of the Modi government. While 3.14 crore minority students were given scholarships between 2014 and 2019, the figures benefited 2.94 crore students between 2009 and 2014 during the Manmohan Singh government. It may be mentioned that the Minority Ministries recognize six communities for minority scholarships, including students from Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Jain communities.

Jains were given minority status in 2014. The largest group of minorities is Muslims. According to data from the Annual Ministry accessed and compared by The Print, the Central Government spent Rs 8,715.4 crores on education scholarships between 2014-2019, compared to Rs 5,360.4 crores during the UPA rule in 2009-2014.
