Amsterdam, Netherlands: A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport when a man fell into the spinning turbine blades of a departing passenger jet, resulting in his death.

The incident happened on the tarmac as a KLM flight was preparing to depart for Billund, Denmark. Dutch airline KLM confirmed the event in a statement: "An incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, the person has died." The identity of the victim has not been disclosed.

Dutch border police, responsible for security at the Netherlands' largest airport, stated that passengers were removed from the aircraft and an investigation is underway.

The aircraft involved was a short-haul Embraer jet, part of KLM's Cityhopper service, which operates flights to nearby destinations such as London.

A photo shared by the NOS public broadcaster showed the plane surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances near the departure terminals.

Schiphol Airport is known for its strict safety and security measures, and accidents are rare. The airport handled approximately 5.5 million passengers last month, according to airport data.
