LUCKNOW: Mayawati, the chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), backed Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu on Saturday.

Mayawati stated at a press conference that the BSP made this decision not in support of the BJP or NDA, nor in opposition to the opposition, but with her party and movement in mind.

"We have decided to back NDA Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu. We made this decision not in support of the BJP or the NDA, nor in opposition to the opposition, but with our party and movement in mind "said the BSP leader.
The BSP chief also claimed that she was not invited to a meeting convened by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar to choose an opposition candidate for the Presidential election.

"In the meeting she called on June 15 to elect an opposition candidate for the Presidential election, Mamata Banerjee invited only selected parties, and when Sharad Pawar called a meeting on June 21, the BSP was also not invited. It demonstrates their casteist motivations "She said.

Murmu met with Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday.
