NEW DELHI: Officials announced on Wednesday that the budget for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy in the Union Budget 2022-23, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has increased by 44% to Rs 6,407.31 crore.
"The livestock budget has been boosted by 40% in 2022-23, while central sector programmes have been enhanced by 48%, reflecting the government's commitment to the expansion of livestock and dairy producers," said Atul Chaturvedi, Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Thousands of dairy cooperatives in India will benefit from the reduced alternate minimum tax and surcharge for cooperative societies, resulting in higher income for the country's eight crore dairy farmers, he said. A 20% increase in the budget for the Rashtriya Gokul Mission and the National Programme for Dairy Development in 2022-23 will boost the productivity of the indigenous bovine population and improve the quality of milk produced, benefiting 8 crore dairy farmers.
He also emphasised that the One Health Mission, which includes a nearly 60% increase in funding for livestock health and disease control for 2022-23 over the previous year, will result in healthier livestock and a healthier India.
