Industry organization Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) has requested the government to remove import duty on metal scrap in the upcoming budget. The organization said that due to less domestic supply of metal scrap, the secondary metal sector of the load depends on imports. Therefore, there is a need to remove duties to promote imports. At present, the basic rate of import duty on a scrap of metals is between 2.5 and 5 percent.

Strong growth is being sought in the junk business. The organization said that India's secondary metals sector depends heavily on imported junk. India has been its net importer for many years due to insufficient creation of junk domestically, so its import should be encouraged. The organization has said that 35 percent of the requirement is being met at the domestic level. The remaining 65 per cent of the requirement is met through imports.
